how to word counter

  1. paste or type your text into the box. counts update as you type.
  2. read words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, reading time and speaking time.
  3. pick a limit such as tweet, meta description or instagram caption to see how many characters are left.
  4. check the keyword table and the reading score, then edit and watch the numbers change.

word counts matter when someone else sets the limit: a teacher wants 500 words, a search result shows about 60 characters of your title and 160 of your description, and a post is cut off past a fixed length. count first, then trim, so nothing gets truncated in a place you did not choose.

for web writing, aim for sentences of about 15 to 20 words and a flesch score above 60. shorten long sentences before simplifying every word. the keyword table is a check, not a target: if your main phrase appears a few times in a natural way you are fine, and a single word above 3 to 4 percent usually reads as repetitive.

reading time uses 238 words per minute and speaking time 140, which suits a calm talk or a video script. add a pause for each slide or demo if you are presenting. everything is counted in your browser and nothing you type is stored.

frequently asked questions

how are words counted?

any run of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation counts as one word, the same way word processors count.

how is reading time calculated?

reading time assumes 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for adults. speaking time uses 140 words per minute.

is my text saved or uploaded?

no. counting happens in your browser and your text is never uploaded or stored.

what is a good flesch reading ease score?

the score runs from 0 to 100 and higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain english that most adults follow easily, which suits blogs and product pages. academic writing often scores 30 to 50. very long sentences and long words pull the score down.

how is keyword density calculated?

density is how often a word or phrase appears divided by the total number of words, as a percentage. common words like "the" and "and" are skipped by default. there is no ideal percentage; if a keyword sounds forced when read aloud, you are using it too often.

do links count towards the tweet limit?

on x, every link counts as 23 characters no matter how long it is, and the limit is 280 for most accounts. the limits bar applies that rule when the tweet limit is selected. other limits count plain characters.
