how to bmi calculator for men

  1. choose metric (kg and cm) or imperial (lb, feet and inches).
  2. enter your weight and height.
  3. read your bmi, category and the weight range that sits in the normal band for your height.
  4. optional: tick compare two scenarios to put a goal weight next to your current weight and see both on the chart.

the standard adult ranges apply to men as they do to women. the common misread is the other direction from the usual advice: a man who lifts weights regularly can reach 26 or 27 with a low body-fat percentage and be perfectly healthy, while a thin man with a bmi of 22 can carry a lot of belly fat.

for men, waist circumference is a useful companion check: a waist above about 102 cm (40 inches) is linked to higher cardiovascular risk, and a waist-to-height ratio over 0.5 is a similar warning. neither is diagnostic. a doctor can check blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, which matter more than the scale.

frequently asked questions

what is a healthy bmi for a man?

18.5 to 24.9, the same as for women. for a man who is 178 cm tall that is roughly 59 to 79 kg.

why is my bmi in the overweight range if i work out?

muscle weighs more than fat per volume. if your waist is not large and your fitness and blood tests are good, the bmi is probably overstating your fat.

should i use another measure too?

yes. waist circumference or waist-to-height ratio, resting heart rate and blood pressure give a more complete picture than bmi alone.
