how to percentage calculator
- pick a mode: x% of y, x is what % of y, % change, % increase or % decrease.
- type the two numbers. the result and the formula update as you type.
- tick compare two scenarios to test a second pair of numbers next to the first, such as two discounts.
- press copy share link to send the exact inputs to someone else.
percentages feel simple until the base changes. a 50% rise followed by a 50% fall leaves you 25% below where you started, because the second step works from the larger number. that is why the increase and decrease modes always start from the value you enter and show the amount added or removed next to the result.
for percent change, the starting value is the denominator. going from 80 to 100 is +25%, but going from 100 to 80 is only -20%. when the starting value is negative or zero the usual formula breaks down, so the tool uses the absolute value for negatives and asks for a non-zero start.
results show up to six decimals and are not rounded for you. if you are working with money, round the final figure yourself to cents. use the compare option when deciding between two offers, for example a 15% discount on one price against 20% off another.

frequently asked questions
how do i calculate a percentage of a number?
divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. for example 15% of 200 is 0.15 × 200 = 30.
how is percentage change calculated?
subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. a negative result is a decrease.
is my data sent anywhere?
no. every calculation runs in your browser and nothing is stored or uploaded.
what is the difference between percent change and percentage points?
percent change compares two values relative to the starting one: going from 20% to 25% is a 25% increase. the gap itself, 5, is five percentage points. mixing the two up is the most common mistake in news and finance numbers.
how do i add or remove a percentage from a price?
use the percent increase or decrease mode. adding 20% to 50 gives 50 × 1.20 = 60 and taking 25% off 80 gives 80 × 0.75 = 60. note that adding 20% and then removing 20% does not return the original number.
can i compare two calculations or share the result?
yes. tick compare two scenarios to fill in a second set of numbers, then press copy share link. the link stores only the numbers in the address, so whoever opens it sees the same inputs. nothing is saved on a server.
