a flac album track is often 25 to 40 mb. at 256 kbps the same track is about 8 mb, and 320 kbps about 10 mb. since flac holds the original, you are encoding from the best possible source, which gives the cleanest mp3.
keep your flac originals. mp3 cannot be turned back into lossless, so treat the conversion as a copy for portable use. for most listening, 256 kbps is indistinguishable from the flac on earbuds and car speakers.
