how to video to gif

  1. drop a video on the box above.
  2. drag the start and end sliders, then press preview selection to check the loop.
  3. choose fit a file size and type a limit, or set frames per second and width yourself.
  4. press make gif, then download it.

a gif is a flipbook of full images, so size grows with seconds, frames per second and pixel width all at once. halving the width cuts the file to roughly a quarter, while halving the frame rate only cuts it in half, so shrink the width first. 480 px wide at 12 fps is a good default for chat and docs.

screen recordings and cartoons compress very well because large areas stay flat. camera footage, grain and fast motion are the worst case and can be several times heavier at the same settings. for those, keep clips under 4 seconds or use fit a file size mode, which measures the real result instead of guessing.

if the clip is longer than about ten seconds, consider sharing an mp4 or webm instead. most sites that accept gifs also accept short video, and the quality per megabyte is far better.

frequently asked questions

what video formats work?

mp4, mov, webm and mkv, plus most other formats your browser can read into ffmpeg.

why is my gif so big?

gif stores every frame as an image. shorten the clip, drop to 10 fps or reduce the width to shrink it a lot.

can i make a gif from a screen recording?

yes. record with the screen recorder tool, then drop the file here.

how does fit a file size mode work?

you type a target such as 8 mb. we guess a width and frame rate, make the gif, measure it, then shrink or grow the width (and lower the fps if needed) and try again, up to five passes. you get the largest gif that still fits.

can i pick just one part of the video?

yes. drag the start and end sliders, or press use current time while the video plays at the moment you want. preview selection loops exactly the part that will become the gif.

does a gif keep the sound?

no. the gif format has no audio. if you need sound, send a short mp4 instead; it is usually ten times smaller than the same gif.
