how to screen recorder

  1. tick the options you want: microphone, tab or system audio, webcam, countdown.
  2. press start recording and choose a screen, window or tab in the browser picker.
  3. watch the 3 second countdown, then do what you want to record.
  4. press stop, preview the video and download the mp4.

the browser asks you what to share each time, and only the thing you pick is recorded. sharing a tab gives the best audio support; sharing a window or the whole screen records picture and, on windows with chrome or edge, can include system sound. on a mac, browsers cannot capture system audio, so tab audio is the only route; use the microphone for your own voice.

for tutorials, turn on the webcam: it is drawn into the recording as a small circle in a corner, so your viewers see you while you show the screen. if you record another window, this page keeps drawing in the background, so you can leave it alone until you press stop.

standard quality is about 3.5 megabits per second, roughly 26 mb per minute. tick higher quality for text-heavy screens with small fonts. long recordings use memory, so trim or compress them afterwards with the trim video and compress video tools.

frequently asked questions

which browsers support it?

chrome, edge, firefox and safari on desktop. phones generally do not allow screen capture from a web page.

can it record system audio?

chrome and edge can capture tab audio, and system audio on windows, when you tick the share-audio box in the picker. safari and firefox mostly record picture only.

where does the video go?

nowhere. it is recorded in memory and you download it; use convert to get an mp4.

how does the webcam overlay work?

your screen and camera are drawn together on a canvas, which is what gets recorded. pick the corner, size and shape before you start; the corner can also be changed while recording.

will i get an mp4?

browsers that can record mp4 directly (recent chrome and safari) save one as is. others record webm, and we convert it to mp4 for you when you stop, using ffmpeg in your browser.

is there a time limit?

no fixed limit. the video is kept in memory, so about 30 minutes at standard quality is comfortable on a laptop. stop and save before it gets too long.
