how to crop image to 9:16 for stories and reels
- drop an image, or several, on the box above.
- pick a ratio such as 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, or leave it on free.
- drag on the picture to place the crop box, or type exact x, y, width and height values.
- download the cropped image, or press crop all to get a zip of centered crops.
9:16 is the full-screen shape of a phone. landscape photos lose a lot of width at this ratio, so cropping a photo that is 4000 × 3000 leaves a 1688 × 3000 slice. if the whole picture matters, resize it with bars instead of cropping.
for stories, keep text and logos out of the top and bottom ten percent, where the app interface sits. a 1080 × 1920 pixel image is enough for full quality. crop here first, then resize image to 1080 wide if your crop is larger.

frequently asked questions
what is the size of a story in pixels?
1080 × 1920 pixels. any 9:16 crop will fit, and a bigger one is scaled down by the app.
why is my cropped photo so narrow?
a 9:16 crop from a landscape photo has to be tall and narrow, so only a slice of the photo is kept. use a vertical photo for the best result.
will this crop work for tiktok and youtube shorts?
yes, they use the same 9:16 frame, so the same crop works on all three.
