a4 is 210 by 297 mm. the image is scaled to fit inside the page minus your margin and never stretched, so the proportions stay right and some white space may remain on the long or short side. the margin starts at 24 points, about 8 mm, which most office printers can print without clipping.

orientation starts on portrait, so wide pictures are scaled down to fit the width. switch to auto to give landscape photos a landscape page, or to landscape if every picture is wide. for us paper, change the page size to us letter, which is a little shorter and wider.

frequently asked questions

will my jpg be stretched to fill the page?

no. the picture keeps its proportions and is centered. only its size changes to fit inside the margins.

what margin is safe for printing?

about 5 mm or 14 points is the minimum for most printers. the default of 24 points leaves a comfortable border.

is the resolution enough for printing?

a4 at 150 dpi needs about 1240 by 1754 pixels, and at 300 dpi about 2480 by 3508. most phone photos exceed that, so use original quality for photo prints.
